Jib Cranes

Jib cranes are a style of cranes in case of which a horizontal portion called the boom or the jib supports a moveable hoist and is generally attached firmly to a wall or a pillar fixed to the floor. Commonly termed as crane jibs, these machines are either capable of moving in an arc or are fixed in a particular position. The ones that can swing through an angle or arc are more useful since they can operate over larger areas as compared to the ones that remain stationary. Nowadays crane jibs have almost become an indispensible part of a worker’s life. They are used to serve a multitude of purposes besides being utilized for a variety of applications in docks, ship yards, sites for building construction, ware houses, factories, etc. This multi-utility equipment comes in different types and is grouped according to their designs and the functions that they perform. There are pillar jibs, swing jibs, articulating jibs, portable jibs, truck jibs, etc. It is also to be noted that the military uses crane jibs to meet a variety of purposes. These cranes are fastened wither to the wall or are fixed to the floor of the building concerned. Whatever is the type of jib cranes under question, the main structure and its various parts are more or less the same in every design. The list includes a vertical portion that is fitted with the boom or the horizontal segment, apart from the under and over braces. The ones that are screwed or fitted to the floor have higher capacities than the ones that are fixed to the wall. Crane jibs generally possess a mechanism whereby they can be rotated using a wheel and made to turn in an angle up to 360 degrees. All crane jibs do not possess arms that are capable of swinging – some are manufactured with fixed arms. In such cases, the lowering and lifting of the loads are most often done with the help of a hoist which is either electrically or manually controlled. Jib cranes that are fixed to walls or floors generally have limitations on their range of operation and this makes the process of lifting maneuvering bulky objects much easier and safer. It also helps to speed up the process. Nowadays, most jib crane manufacturers have the option of customized cranes that is a crane can be built according to the specifications of the user. Their capacities may vary from 50kg to 500 tons. Jib cranes have 3 key features –

  1. They do not always rotate in an angular manner. They also pick up and lower loads apart from carrying them from side to side.
  2. Crane jibs come in a variety of designs like floor mounted, wall mounted, unsupported, etc
  3. Floor or wall mounted crane jibs are capable of carrying higher quantities of load than the ones that have to be mounted on walls.
A cantilevered jib crane has either full or limited capabilities to rotate through an angle. Because of their user friendly mechanisms, crane jibs can be used for indoor, household works as well.   All jib cranes are required to meet certain standardizations and also need to be certified as okay and fit for use before they can actually be put to work. All of them also come with unique identity numbers which comes in handy in case some repair works need to be done.
